Invisalign case study

STRAIGHT TEETH IN JUST 20 WEEKS!

Patient Profile: Kathy

Kathy is a mum and part time hairdresser living and working in Bath. She was concerned about her malaligned lower incisors, which were also causing the alignment of her upper front teeth to deteriorate. She was keen to correct the problem but didn't want to wear a fixed appliance either conventional or lingual, so Invisalign was an ideal solution for her. She also wanted to be able to continue socialising and visiting restaurants. One of the main attractions of Invisalign was that she would be able to take her aligner out when eating and not worry about getting spinach in her teeth!

Kathy's Treatment Plan

We took accurate impressions of Kathy's teeth, plus lots of photographs and 1 0PG X Ray and sent them all off to the Californian Head Office of Invisalign. We showed the 'Clincheck' to Kathy and she decided to go ahead with the treatment. Six weeks later, a total of 10 aligners arrived from the States.

Because Kathy's condition is fairly mild, her treatment equates to only 20 weeks of active treatment with a new aligner every 2 weeks. Kathy then visited the practice and we explained in detail how the aligners are worn and kept clean. The aligners have to be worn for 22 hours a day and can be taken out for eating and teeth cleaning. Kathy was advised that she could stick to her normal teeth cleaning routine and that, unlike fixed braces, there should be no plaque accumulation and food debris. Kathy has been advised that, once her treatment is complete, she will have to wear her final aligner at night for a year.

Cost

The cost of Kathy's treatment is similar to conventional fixed braces and is payable in instalments throughout the active phase of her treatment. Invisalign is not available on the NHS.

Kathy's View

I was going to have some new crowns fitted and I was advised by my dentist that the crowns would look better if I had my teeth straightened as my upper teeth protruded a little bit. I went to see Dr Tonge and he advised Invisalign as a form of treatment which would fit in with my lifestyle. The process was really easy.

I visited Dr Tonge and he took several impressions of my teeth, some photographs and a special x ray. When I next visited the surgery I was able to see a series of computer images of my teeth and how they will change over the treatment time and at the end of the treatment.

It was really impressive. The retainers are really easy to wear. I expected some pain but there really isn't any discomfort at all. No one has noticed them and even when I point them out to people they can hardly see them. I put the retainers in 'Retainer Brite' every morning and by the time I have cleaned my teeth and cleansed my face they are ready to put in again.

The best thing about Invisalign is that you can literally see it working after only a few days, when I take them out to clean them I can see that my teeth are improving almost daily. This is so encouraging.
